Wow - $214,000 for Salt Lake scout leader?

Hey, Utah boys: Forget becoming Vice President; shoot for Boy Scout executive instead. An in-depth report by the D-News this morning mentions that Great Salt Lake Council Boy Scout executive Paul Moore makes a whopping $214,000 a year, about the same as the Vice President of the United States. The national Boy Scout leader makes about $1 million. Other tidbits include:

• Boy Scouts both in Utah and nationally tend to pay their top executives significantly more than do other large, nonprofit groups that serve youths.

• The three Scout councils in Utah tend to have many more executives than average with salaries above $50,000 a year.

• While pay for top Scout executives in Utah is high compared to salaries for such professions here as doctors and lawyers, those executives still generally receive less than fellow Scout executives elsewhere in similarly sized councils.

The story includes justifications for the big bucks from BSA executives. I'll be interested to see how they fly with one of my co-workers, who gives up thousands of dollars each year serving as a volunteer scout leader.

We just finished the Sustaining Membership Drive for our unit. Every year it gives me heartburn. A number of people believe the money helps the boys but it just goes to Scout Headquarters. I am in my 4th tour of duty with Boy Scouts as the Scoutmaster or assistant. I only do this because I believe in helping young men. I can honestly say, and scouts must always tell the truth and be honest, even old ones, that the Boy Scouts of America, at least here in Utah is busted. Roundtables are the dumbest meetings I ever wasted my time attending. I would rather watch repeats of the professional bowlers tour. Summer camps operated by headquarters are nothing more than merit badge factories. If you are a kid, don't smoke pot or threaten the insturctor, who is often 14 or 15 years of age, pay your money, you get the badge. The review process never insures anyone learned anything through rank advancement. I doubt there are more than 10% of Eagle Scouts who can actually tie a bowline and describe the differences in first aid for sun stroke and heat exhaustion.

It is time for LDS leaders to stop supporting this DOA program and move on and utilize their own Duty to God program. For one thing it does not cost our unit $1600.00 a year we send to the fat cats at headquarters in SLC. Think of a trip the boys could have with a budget of $1600.00.

That's pathetic! Are Girl Scouts the same way? I'm never buying stuff from Boy Scouts again!

I went to Woodbadge this summer. It's a training camp for leaders that deeply instills the spirit of scouting into the participants. Part of the power of the program is the personal sacrifice involved. The instructors and participants voluntarily give up a week of there precious time, this would be in addition to scout camps that would take an additional week. I understand the need to pay people to run this large organization, but it infuriates me that an organization funded by sacrifice would practice priestcraft or something very close to televangelism. In my unit, becoming a scoutleader is literally a calling from God, so lose the ungodly salaries.

Ain't that the truth.

I was a Scout many years ago [the 1950s] and owe the program a great deal for introducing a city kid to hiking and camping, which have provided much pleasure over my whole life, and for teaching this only child independence and self-reliance. That mattered.

But I was fortunate to get into a troop led by men whose general operating principle was "yes Council and national to death, and then do what we want to anyway." We never won any unit awards because we passed on the annual Council Camporee [in a grassy field behind Gruman aviation factory] which was largely a fund-raiser for parents to visit, and went up to the Catskills instead. And the Scoutmaster had a list of merit badge counselors who he knew actually required mastery of whatever was required, and would not sign off on any other basis. We had to get badges from those councilors only. He wouldn't forward rises in rank to Council if you came in with something signed by a lick-and-a-promise councilor. [And we knew from kids in other troops who they were.]

By the time my own son went through the scouting program, they were already advertising summer camps on the basis of how many merit badges you could get signed off in a week.

It's still a good program, or can be, if the local unit volunteers are good people with their heads on straight, who have the sense to yes council and national to death, as necessary, and then go on and do what they know works and they know how to do well. But I think now you have to hunt around and do a little judicious asking to find a troop run the right way, not the Council/National paper-pushers' way.
